Scales and arpeggios

Grade 7 raises tempo (♩ ≈ 132), expands the scales-in-thirds list, and asks for hands-together arpeggios in inversions across most keys. Staccato touch is examined alongside legato.

What this grade asks for

    Scales (hands together, four octaves)

    All major and minor keys, legato + staccato as called.

  • Section

    Scales a third apart

    Two octaves hands together, in additional major keys.

  • Section

    Scales in legato thirds (one hand)

    Two octaves in C and G major. Right hand, legato.

  • Section

    Chromatic scales

    Hands together, four octaves, starting on any note.

  • Section

    Chromatic scale a minor third apart

    Hands together, two octaves.

  • Section

    Arpeggios + dominant/diminished 7ths

    Hands together, four octaves, root position and inversions.
