Oratorio

Definition

An extended musical composition for solo voices, chorus, and orchestra, originally modeled after the structure of an ancient Greek tragedy but presenting a religious subject matter. The genre originated in Italy during the 17th century, with significant contributions from composers like George Frideric Handel ('Messiah'). Although not directly related to piano repertoire, some oratorios may include keyboard obbligati, such as J.S. Bach's 'Christmas Oratorio.'
