Mazurka

Definition

A dance originating from Poland in the 16th century, characterized by a triple meter (3/4 or 3/2) and duple accompaniment. The mazurka evolved as a lively social dance and was later incorporated into classical music repertoire, particularly popularized by Frédéric Chopin who wrote many notable piano mazurkas in the early 19th century.
