Haydn produced a steady stream of Deutsche Tänze across his career — short triple-metre dances written for court balls and informal gatherings, lighter cousins of the minuet that gradually evolved (in the next generation) into the Viennese waltz. Hob IX:12 is a set of twelve, originally scored for small ensemble; the keyboard arrangement of No. 1 is a clean reduction that loses none of the dance's character.
The piece is in D major and tests two technical priorities at once: a buoyant three-in-a-bar lift in both hands, and a small but clear dynamic plan across the two strains. The right hand carries the dance tune; the left hand walks an even bass with occasional thirds. The hand position expands slightly beyond a five-finger frame at the top of the melodic arc, but the stretch is comfortable.
Two pitfalls. First, Grade 2 students often play this too literally — every quaver the same length, every bar the same weight. Haydn's writing rewards a small lean toward the downbeat and a lift on the third beat. Second, the second strain often gets played at the same dynamic as the first; the dance asks for a clear contrast, even when the score is sparingly marked.
